Summary
Combining different materials in order to optimize motor vehicle parts has always been a way to invent new innovative components. By joining metals and polymers, the individual advantages of both materials can be combined to realize characteristics the individual materials can not achieve. The Institut für Kraftfahrwesen Aachen has conducted a research project funded by the Studiengesellschaft Stahlanwendung e.V. on the topic of metallic structures reinforced by polymer structures for the use in motor vehicles. The project has focused on presenting the technology, aspects of finite element analysis of hybrid structures and potential future use of the technology in vehicle components.
