Mini Thesis
During the mini thesis (“Studienarbeit”) the student works on a technical project under the guidance and the support of a supervisor. The mini thesis can be done at any institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and usually comprises 260 hours of work. A registration form (“Erfassungsbogen” - http://www.maschinenbau.rwth-aachen.de/downloads/maschinenbau/formulare.html) for the mini thesis has been distributed upon enrolment.
Students are to find the appropriate subjects individually. Most institutes have a list of possible subjects, both at the entrance of their building and on the corresponding web pages (here: Studien-/Diplom / Mini-/Master-Thesis Site of the ika). The individual organization includes choosing which semester to complete the mini thesis in. It is recommended to decide this at the beginning of the master programme.
In case the mini thesis is planned to be done at a different Faculty or outside the RWTH Aachen (e.g. industrial company), it must be approved by the “internal” supervisor (Professor) in the Faculty and by the examination board (“Prüfungsausschuss”) of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

. In this case, the master thesis must be done in an institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
The programme coordinator cannot make your mini thesis arrangements for you, however he can give advice about possible contact persons for interesting subjects of the mini theses.
It is advisable to regularly keep in touch with the supervisor during the mini thesis, so that questions and doubts can be answered, even though this is usually the case.
