On October 4 th the “EARPA Safety Workshop 2010” took place at the Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge (ika) of RWTH Aachen University. The workshop gathered approximately 50 experts from the field of active safety from all over Europe together.
It was hosted by Adrian Zlocki, who moderated the sessions and the visit to the Aldenhoven Testing Centre after lunch. Before the first session Mr. Peter Urban introduced EARPA and the EARPA activities on active safety within the European Community.
In the first session European initiatives on testing of active safety systems were presented. Richard Schramm showed the latest development of Euro NCAP tests and introduced Euro NCAP Advanced. Paul Lemmen gave an update of the status of the ASSESS and Micha Lesemann on the eVLAUE project. Both are European projects, which deal with test methods for active safety.
In the second session an insight on the latest research activities of two German suppliers were given. Michael Fausten of Bosch and Bernd Hartmann of Continental presented systems for accident avoidance by braking and steering manoeuvres.
As a highlight a visit to the newly opened Aldenhoven Testing Centre was organised. On the test track different demonstrations of tools and active safety vehicles were given by TNO and ika. The participants had the possibility to experience ika’s test vehicles by themselves and get a closer look at systems and tools.
In the afternoon session Helena Gellermann presented an overview over the Swedish FOT activity SeMiFOT. Carmen Rodarius talked about pre-crash tools of TNO and Jürgen Gugler explained the newly developed runoverable target carrier of TU Graz for active safety tests.
The workshop ended in a roundtable discussion, in which the necessary research on the topic of active safety was stressed. The vivid discussion concluded on the need of driver support and appropriate human machine interface design. All participants were invited to join the opening of the Aachen Colloquium 2010 in the evening at Eurogress in Aachen.
