At first, physical and audiological basics as well as legal rules regarding valid measurement prescriptions, measurement methods and allowable limit values in the field of vehicle acoustics will be discussed. In the next step, vehicle specific sound sources like the drive train, brakes and tires as well as realizable noise reduction measures will be described.
On the basis of today's road traffic it is compared to which extent vehicle manufacturers, operators and the legislator can influence a reduction of traffic noise. Finally, the technical possibilities for noise reduction are presented on the basis of executed research projects (quiet vehicles).
The course is completed with a practical demonstration of selected measurement techniques, noise-reducing vehicle components and measurements in the semi-anechoic chamber of the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) of RWTH Aachen University.
