Prof. Gies übernimmt die Leitung der Pkw-Fahrwerkentwicklung bei Volkswagen

Der Leiter des Instituts für Kraftfahrzeuge (ika) der RWTH Aachen University, Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Gies, verlässt das Institut zum 30.09.2009, um die Leitung der Pkw-Fahrwerksentwicklung des Volkswagen-Konzerns zu übernehmen. Er folgt auf Karl Horst Fuhrmann (61), der in den Ruhestand geht.

Prof. Dr. Stefan Gies studierte und promovierte an der RWTH Aachen University im Bereich Kraftfahrwesen. Von 1994 bis 2000 war er bei der Ford Werke AG für die Fahrdynamik zuständig. Anschließend wechselte er zur Audi AG und verantwortete dort im Bereich Fahrwerk die Fahrdynamik, den Fahrkomfort und die Freigabe der Lenksysteme, Federungssysteme und Räder/Reifen. 2007 nahm er den Ruf zur Professur am Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge der RWTH Aachen an und wurde Beiratsvorsitzender der Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen (fka). In dieser Zeit engagierte er sich insbesondere im Bereich Elektromobilität und setzte entsprechende Forschungsprojekte und Kooperationen auf.

The ika makes a recognized contribution to solving current and future challenges both in public projects and in cooperation with automobile manufacturers and suppliers.

The basis of our intensive research work for large parts of the automotive industry as well as public funding bodies at EU, federal and state level is our extensive infrastructure, which ranges from drive, battery, chassis and tire test benches to acoustic, thermodynamic and servo-hydraulic test facilities to a complete vehicle crash facility and test tracks including state-of-the-art measurement technology. In addition, there is up-to-date software and hardware equipment for all necessary simulation disciplines. ika employs about 120 permanent staff and more than 80 student assistants. In addition, around 100 student research and development projects are carried out on a permanent basis.
