KoMoDnext

Kooperative Mobilität im digitalen Testfeld Düsseldorf

Automated driving and connected mobility offers great potential for improving traffic safety and efficiency. However, all involved parties must face new challenges in the process of developing automated vehicles and intelligent infrastructure. Important research topic is the early recognition of demanding or even critical traffic situations and the development of strategies for handling them. The use of V2X-communication in automated vehicles and intelligent traffic management systems plays an important role.

Main goal of the project “KoMoDnext” is to investigate, to what extent the interaction of automated vehicles and intelligent infrastructure influences the recognition and handling of critical situations. On the one hand, the effects of V2X-communication on the safety and efficiency of traffic flow shall be analyzed. This includes the integration of information provided by automated vehicles into intelligent traffic management systems. On the other hand, requirements for automated driving in complex or even safety-critical situations (e.g. inner-city nodes, tunnels, bridges, etc.) and the influence of V2X-data provided by the infrastructure are to be considered. In this context, automated vehicles can be seen as mobile sensor systems that aggregate information about the local driving environment. This data is taken up by traffic management algorithms via V2X-communication in order to run the infrastructure intelligently (e.g. traffic control systems). Processed information about the global traffic environment and possible hazards are transferred to automated vehicles in order to estimate the availability of possible automation levels. An important factor is the provision of data about the Operational Design Domain (ODD).
The Institute for Automotive Engineering participates in the project “KoMoDnext” with a test vehicle that shall interact with the infrastructure. The aim is to develop or extend standardized V2I-communication interfaces (e.g. ITS-G5), which allow bilateral data transfer. An important part of this work is the integration of PKI certificates into the communication interfaces to ensure compatibility with current series vehicles. Within the scope of the project, the test vehicle shall process information about the locally detected driving environment and provide it to the traffic management algorithms. In addition, the integration and reasonable use of infrastructural information within the automated driving function shall be analyzed. This includes the evaluation of requirements that must be met by the V2X-data.

Test environment for “KoMoDnext” is the digital test field Düsseldorf, which was developed and established in the predecessor project “KoMoD”. The existing V2I-infrastructure will be extended according to the research approaches in “KoMoDnext”. After the end of the project, the test field and the implemented V2I-interfaces will continue to be operated and made available to interested external users.
