SYNERGIES

Real and synthetic scenarios generated for the development, training, virtual testing and validation of CCAM systems

The SYNERGIES project is an EU-funded project with the aim of harmonizing and extending the scenario-based development, improvement and validation of connected and automated driving systems on European level. To this end, the project will develop the SYNERGIES platform, which consists of a scenario database and a marketplace for tools. The scenarios and tools are intended to reduce development time and costs, increase the safety and reliability of automated driving systems and ensure broader acceptance in society.

In recent years, both research and industry have already demonstrated at national and international level that automated driving is technically feasible. Currently, the safety approval of automated driving systems is an obstacle to their widespread market launch. The reason for this is the complexity of the systems and the road traffic in which they have to operate autonomously. Scenario-based testing is intended to overcome this hurdle. The idea of scenario-based testing is to abstract road traffic and map it in individual (test) scenarios. This promises to reduce the testing effort for automated driving systems, as the content of the individual tests can be specifically controlled via the scenarios. The SYNERGIES platform is a European solution for providing the data and tools for this scenario-based testing process.

As part of the SYNERGIES project, the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) is conducting research into two aspects of filling the scenario database: The recording of real scenarios and the generation of synthetic yet realistic scenarios. To record real scenarios, ika uses its intelligent roadside infrastructure sensors to record and process real traffic. The aim of generating synthetic yet realistic scenarios is to supplement the scenarios recorded in real traffic and to speed up the filling of the scenario database.
