eVchain.NRW
Electric Vehicle Value Chain in NRW
North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the most important locations for automotive industry in Germany. Due to the current technological change from conventional vehicles to electric mobility, the automotive industry in North Rhine-Westphalia will face a structural change. Against this backdrop, the project eVchain.NRW has been launched with the objective of analyzing the automotive industry’s value chain with focus on changes caused by electric mobility.
As part of the project, current value-adding structures as well as production processes in automotive industry have been investigated. Based on this investigation a technical reference structure for conventional vehicles has been developed. In a further step the product structure of a battery electric vehicle has been depicted. Afterwards, production structures of the vehicle as well as of key components such as battery, electric motor, power electronics and fuel cells have been investigated. On this basis, the future value chain of electric mobility has been analyzed and modeled. In the last step, the resulting changes in the value-added chain have been described and upcoming chances and risks for the automotive location NRW in the context of electric mobility have been further analyzed. Derived from this analysis, recommended actions for automotive suppliers, economic development agencies and political actors have been outlined.
