Development of a Methodology for Analyzing the Pressure Distribution in the Tire Contact Patch under Horizontally Loaded Tires

Topic and Goal of the Thesis

Tire simulation is becoming increasingly important in vehicle development. The pressure distribution in the tire contact patch is a key parameter, and it is currently measured at the Institute for Automotive Engineering using a pressure sensor. However, this sensor is not designed to withstand horizontal forces.

Therefore, this work aims to identify a suitable intermediate layer between the tire and the sensor that can effectively transmit horizontal forces. A parameter study and comparison measurements will also be performed to develop a correction methodology.

Working Points

  • Further development of the existing measurement method to introduce lateral and longitudinal forces into the tire contact patch
  • Selection and experimental validation of suitable intermediate layer materials
  • Analysis of differences in pressure distribution with and without intermediate layer
  • Development of a correction factor to adjust measurement results

Requirements

  • Reliability, commitment and enjoyment of working independently
  • Knowledge in automotive engineering and MATLAB
  • Experience with LabView is an advantage (not a must)
