Holistic Approach for Driver Role Integration and Automation Allocation for European Mobility Needs

The European project HADRIAN, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme, is dedicated to the definition of a safe and acceptable driver role during automated driving. Especially the repeated transitions between different stages of automated driving are a challenge that will be investigated within the project. HADRIAN stands for "Holistic Approach for Driver Role Integration and Automation Allocation for European Mobility Needs". For this purpose, the project partners investigate and define the driver role for automated vehicles adopting a holistic, user-centered approach and exploring multimodal and adaptive interaction concepts. The developed concepts will be tested in various studies both in driving simulators and on the road during the project duration

Under the management of Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH from Austria, 16 partners from all over Europe are working together. PLUS, ASFINAG, AVL List GmbH and IESTA also come from Austria. From Germany, the ika of RWTH Aachen University, the Federal Highway Research Institute and the VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH also participate. Other partners come from Spain (Universidad de Granada, Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation), Great Britain (University of Surrey), the Netherlands (TU Delft), Greece (National Technical University of Athens), France (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives), Slovenia (Nervtech) and Turkey (Ford).

The ika focusses on the basic methodological approach to the development of new interaction concepts, as well as the design and evaluation of an innovative swivel seat concept. This new solution shall help the continuous communication of the current automation status to the driver. The aim of the swivel seat concept is to safely transfer the driving task from the vehicle back to the driver while keeping the driver mental load as low as possible. The effectiveness of the concept will be tested in a user study.
