L3Pilot

Piloting Automated Driving on European Roads

The L3Pilot project investigates how automated driving can be implemented as a safe and efficient means of transportation and what effects arise from the introduction of automated vehicles. The focus is on systems of SAE automation level 3 and some of automation level 4. The functionalities of the considered systems are tested under different conditions with approximately 1000 test persons in 8 European countries. Some of the systems will even be tested cross-border.

The tested functionalities cover a wide range, from parking to driving on the motorway and driving on inner-city routes. Overall, data will be collected to evaluate technical aspects, user acceptance, as well as driving and travel behavior. From this data, the effect of automated driving on traffic safety, efficiency and mobility will be determined, which will then be expressed as social benefits.

Due to the wide range of automated systems and test environments, L3Pilot is the first project worldwide that comprehensively tests and evaluates the effects of automated driving.

Within the project, industry and research partners from 12 European countries work together. While the industrial partners in the project are responsible for preparing the automated vehicles and conducting the studies, the research partners are developing the methods for determining the effects of automated driving and then implementing them. Within the project, the ika is leading the sub-project "Evaluation", in which the methods for the evaluation of the collected data (from surveys and measurement data) will be further developed and applied, so that by the end of the project new findings regarding automated driving based on data from real tests will be available.
