Thermal management in electric vehicles - diversity or standardisation?

- Christian Rathberger (Magna Powertrain)

Our Meetup series for interested parties presents and discusses current, practice-relevant research topics in the field of future mobility.

Looking at the electric vehicles currently available on the market, we see that there are many quite different approaches to their thermal management. These range from quite simply designed passively cooled batteries to highly complex overall systems with heat pumps... and from simple electric heating to optimised oil spray cooling in high-performance electric engines. And further new technologies are already at the developmental starting line to also find their way into series production vehicles. This diversity presents automotive engineers with difficult challenges in the development process ... especially regarding the fact that also the development cycles have to become shorter and faster. So, is a standardisation of the used concepts used coming up, or will the diversity perhaps become even greater? Perhaps an overview of different cooling system architectures and the design decisions behind them will bring us a step closer to answering this question ...
